I also make everyday quilts for fun, but I also make at least one or two quilts that are strictly for show. That's what really gets my juices flowing, so to speak. From start to finish, it takes time, effort, research, trial & error. But, oh! The rewards in the end! My studio is a pre-fab building, 18 X 30. There are beams that are 18 feet across. One of those beams is now full of ribbons! They're not all blue, some are red, some are white, but they all represent a win in a show for the work I've done on my quilts.

Part of the process of putting any quilt together is choosing the right batting. A couple of days ago I received an email from APQS that contained an interesting article explaining how to choose your batting for your project. I'll give you the link at the end of this post because there is a chart for you to download that is a good reference tool.

I use Hobbs 80/20 for my every day quilts. I buy it by the roll because it's cheaper for me to get it that way. For my show quilts, I use the Hobbs 80/20 on the bottom & Hobbs wool on the top. I want a good loft for my designs. If I don't want them to stand out so much then I won't double bat the quilt.

APQS has some very interesting articles if you have some time to read them. But here is the link to Dawn Cavanaugh's article on batting: https://www.apqs.com/how-to-pick-batting-for-your-quilt/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=how+to+pick+batting&utm_campaign=newsletter.august.28.2020
Dolphin Quiltinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366894078805139430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822968256711826151.post-62845237264113575342020-08-25T08:39:00.000-05:002020-08-25T08:39:53.338-05:00Sunshine
Seems I've been a little remiss in the blog department the last few days as I've been tied up with a certain little girl. She weighs in at about 16 lbs,, & has lots of fur! My husband, Floyd, & I have Shelties dogs. We started out with two, then one, then two, which became three, and now, has become four. We had Lassie first for 2 years & got Skipper as a mate for her, but we lost her earlier this year. Instead of replacing her from a Breeder, we decided to rescue a Sheltie for our forlorn Skipper who was lost without Lassie. So, about 7 weeks ago, a breeding kennel owner near us passed away & the neighbor posted on Facebook that they needed homes for the dogs. We wound up with 2 of the girls, Rockie & Pebbles. Now comes last Friday. Well, a long time ago, I mean YEARS AGO, we applied for adoption through Sheltie Rescue & they called us with a little girl from the same kennel as our other girls! But now she's at a different kennel & we have to call them to go get her. O.K., so we call them, & we go to get her & they get her so agitated & scared that she gets away & no one can catch her. We finally get her trapped, but we let her be for the weekend & we get hold of our Vet & consult with him as to advice as to how to handle getting her in the carrier to transport her home. Best thing he says is for us to deal with her, not them, as they are the ones she doesn't trust anymore & she doesn't know us. So, we go up there & we gain enough of her trust that she allowed us to get her in the carrier to come home. Here she is:

Dolphin Quiltinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366894078805139430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822968256711826151.post-49246857421677927882020-08-20T14:41:00.001-05:002020-08-20T14:41:59.888-05:00Blocks 1-4 of Afternoon Delight
I thought I'd share the beginnings of the painted Afternoon Delight Blocks. Well, to solve that problem, a lady by the name of Lori Holt came up with an idea of a board to put all your pieces on to take to your machine, stitch them in the proper order, an then take them to the ironing station. She calls them Design Boards & they're so cute! And so easy to make! I've just make 18 of the 10" ones & 2 of the 14" ones for me. She also says she makes them as large as 18", but I don't really see a need for that size for me, personally. Here's a link to her YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uO-fosn6Yfs

And a picture a one of my 10" Design Boards:

Dolphin Quiltinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366894078805139430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822968256711826151.post-63957946683990278232020-08-17T14:28:00.000-05:002020-08-17T14:28:25.712-05:00Jesse's Gems Cover
The other day, when I started posting again, I told you about the other project I'm currently working on. It's called Jesse's Gems. The original pattern was first published in "Piecing It All Together" by JoAnne Louis and Chris Moline and was inspired by an unnamed block in an old newspaper column. It was the first first quilt that JoAnne's daughter wanted to assist with, so she named it after her. I saw the email the end of April & immediately ordered the pattern. My start date on it became 5/2/2020. My intention is to show it. Here is the pattern:

Dolphin Quiltinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366894078805139430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822968256711826151.post-41806972430060394882020-08-15T16:07:00.000-05:002020-08-15T16:07:34.922-05:00Double 9 Patch
I've managed to get out to the studio & get some sewing time in & work on the double 9 patch blocks. There will be 64 in total in the quilt. Each block consists of 5 - 9 patch blocks equaling 320 each of which is only 2 3/4" square. The Double 9 block, when finished, measures 7 1/4" before it's sewn into the quilt.

Here's one:

Dolphin Quiltinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366894078805139430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822968256711826151.post-28321061320949298672020-08-12T16:14:00.001-05:002020-08-12T16:14:40.108-05:00
Well, it's been a couple of days & I've got a few more blocks painted & I'm almost caught up with everyone that's doing Afternoon Delight. Or at least I think so at least. When I've caught up in a few days. I'll take pics of the blocks & post them for all to see. But what I can share is a picture of the shoo fly block. I've got all of them done. HOORAY! Here's one:

Dolphin Quiltinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366894078805139430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822968256711826151.post-39834967647963904392020-08-09T15:36:00.000-05:002020-08-09T15:36:13.325-05:00
It's been a very long time since I've been on my blog. with the pandemic having hit this world, more and more people have taken to the internet to learning things. I have been thinking that it's high time I resurrect my blog & start interacting with the quilting world that I love and maybe share some of my knowledge with you of what I'm doing, how I'm accomplishing it or how I did it (if it was past tense), etc.

So, where to start? Well, first of all, I'm working on two projects. 1) Afternoon Delight. This quilt is a Sue Garman pattern that she designed. Totally scrappy, it's a Block of the Month being done by the Quilt Show and headed up by Barbara Black. If you've never taken a class from her, please do, you'll learn a lot, she's an awesome teacher! 2) Jesse's Gem. This is an English Paper Pieced project. One that I can take with me to the Dr.'s office waiting room, etc.

Afternoon Delight has 64 double 9-patch blocks, 9 Shoo Fly blocks and 40 applique blocks. Well, that's what the pattern calls for anyway. If anyone knows me, they know that I'm not one to follow ALL the directions! I'm painting my applique blocks. That's right, I said painting my block. In the coming days I'll show you another of my quilts that I took liberty on the pattern that turned out different from the original.

I'm still longarming. I love custom work, but simple works for every day quilts too. As I go along I'll catch you up on some of the quilts that you've missed since I've not been posting.

Stay tuned! I'll be back shortly!
Dolphin Quiltinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366894078805139430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822968256711826151.post-18429239619530902722019-04-29T17:12:00.000-05:002019-04-29T17:12:58.918-05:00Summer Sale

Last post Sept. 2017? Boy, am I lousy in keeping people informed or what!

It took a lot of Physical Therapy, attention from a home health nurse, and overseeing from a bunch of Doctors, but I'm back to a somewhat normal self. I'll never be 100% of what I was, but I'm almost 70 years old too, so what do I expect? Right? I'm back to quilting, am President of Texas Association of Quilt Guilds & active in the American Legion Auxiliary. What more can I do?

Through the process of getting well, I lost all my longarm business. My best customer actually passed away just a few months after I got out of the hospital, but the rest just found other longarmers or bought their own machines. Now I'm starting over again. So, look for a sale coming soon!

Well! I've been gone a very long time, but it's time to get back to blogging.

Let's start with catching up!

I see the last post was April of 2016. So...I've got to bring you up to speed since then!

I sold Queenie. A nice young lady from Katy, TX came up & bought her.

And Hubby, Floyd, came off the road to run local & is home every night & off weekends. It's really changed my schedule! Plus, we've joined the local American Legion Post. So we've gotten involved with the activities there also. More about that as we go along.

As for me, personally, I got sick in October. I mean REALLY sick! As in DEAD! Yep, that's what I said, D.E.A.D.! 3 times! It's amazing what an ingrown pubic hair can do! I got one that festered & got infected & somehow got a couple different strains of e coli & sepsis set in. All in all, 42 days in 4 different hospitals, of which 8 days were in a medically induced coma. I barely made it home for Thanksgiving.

I'm going to try my best to get ya'll caught up, so stay tune!

Well, it's quilt show season again, so have been busy getting some quilts ready. 54-40 or fight & Diamond Log Cabin are going to shows, plus Wild & Goosey. Here's an addition to the group, Pineapple.
Here's one of Dianna's for show too, Bowties.
Well hello there! I know, I haven't kept up, but I have been busy in the quilting world.

I've been attacking my scrap bins, Bonnie Hunter style! Her 2015 Winter mystery, "Allietare", was on the list.

And, while I was in between clues for this, I worked on Wild & Goosey.

Used up a lot of scraps, but still have some left!

Dolphin Quiltinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366894078805139430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5822968256711826151.post-58594352172635424592015-09-26T13:52:00.002-05:002015-09-26T13:52:26.017-05:00

Well, surprise! Surprise! I'm actually getting caught up on the blog!

I actually bit the bullet & used metallic thread on a quilt. I'd always thought it would have been one of my own first, but it wound up being a customer's quilt. I was a little intimidated by metallic thread, but I believe in my Glide thread, so I took a deep breath & went for it!
My customer is fairly new to quilting, but not sewing. She was an instructor for fashion sewing for many years, consequentially, she can definitely think outside of the box! Her ideas are incredible, but her execution needs quite a bit of work. I'm guiding her as we go along because I see some major awards in her future. Anyway, her quilt was poofy in spots, points didn't match closely, & of course, wavy borders. Not too bad on the borders though, she's improving.
Here's some pics of how it finished up.

The light lines are actually silver bias tape sewn down. She also used a chiffon type lame cloth in the diamonds, which can be very stretchy. I did manage to get it to lay down, but it sure wasn't easy!

Well, just playing around with some cloth the other day. I've always wanted to make a Cathedral Window quilt, so I tried my hand with a Mini! This one measures 11.5 inches square!

I think I'll put it into the Canton show this year. It'll be for sale. If it doesn't sell, I'll donate it to TAQC next year.
Well, here's the smaller version of 54-40 or fight. I quilted it almost identically to it's larger version.

I did the outer border differently.

This one is already entered into a couple of shows. Let's see if it ribbons!

Well, as well as getting the trees burned, I did manage to get some quilting done. Here's the quilt I did for Dianna.

Finally got my thread rack for Queenie built too. Floyd helped me with it.

This prompted me to do some re-arranging. Still have some to do, but I like how it's coming out!

Here's the sewing area, now complete with block design boards.

Cutting, ironing station & fabric stash. The new design wall goes all the way across the end of the building, 14 feet!

Longarm area. Much more organized.

Library, scrap bins & quilts in waiting to be quilted. Of course, there's my quilt Christmas tree. It stays up all year with all the ornaments handmade from quilters.

I just got the quilt off Queenie, so I'll show it to you soon!
Well, it was a busy 4th of July. We were supposed to have a big family reunion at our house, but we only had 2 of the kids home. Floyd's son, Sam, came in from Spokane, WA & Melissa came in from Longview, TX with her youngest son, Koal. I already had her oldest, Chance, as he'd been with me for a month. Keeping up with an 11 year old can sure get tiring!
Here's the only picture I got that day. Floyd & Sam sharing pictures on their phones.
While Chance was with me, we tackled the pile of tree debris from the 3 trees that came down 2 years ago. We've been under a burn ban for so long that I couldn't burn them off. Finally, with all the rain we had this Spring, they lifted the burn ban & Chance & I got busy cleaning up the back yard.
The trees covered from the tree here on the right to almost the grey building (Floyd's shop). And from the trees to the fence. The white area that you see is actually burn area #2, with #3 behind it. #1 was to the right of the trees so I could burn out a small stump. I got it out too!
After nearly 6 weeks of burning, this is what's left. The 3 huge ones won't be burned, we're leaving them for seating around the campfire, but this will be our permanent burn area.
Now that it's all cleaned up, I can plant some grass in the bare areas & mow it when it gets going.
